17 New Things to Try in ’17

I know many would expect a post like this to come at the beginning of a new year. However, we are only four months into the year, and there is still plenty of time to try something new! It’s always nice to find new things to do. I find that if I accomplish more in a day or week I generally feel better as a whole.

Anyways, without further ado, here are 17 new things to try in 2017:

Find/start a new hobby

It can be anything as small as learning to cross-stitch or as big as woodworking. I have found that new hobbies to fill your time are an excellent way to feel more accomplished and more relaxed. It’s a great way to unwind after a long day.

Read more books

There are so many wonderful books to be read! In fact, so many that I often feel there will never be enough time to read all the books I would like! Reading can also be a great way to unwind, as well as give your eyes a rest if you’ve spent a long time around screens during the day. For those who don’t enjoy reading- audiobooks are a great alternative!

Find a new coffee shop you may enjoy

Who doesn’t enjoy a cozy, little coffee shop that offers delicious food and coffee? Take the time to explore a little and find a new place to enjoy some downtime.

Take more walks

It’s a wonderful feeling to stretch your legs after a long day. Taking more walks is the perfect way to take time each day to think about what has passed during the day, as well as to get a bit of light exercise in. For those of us who don’t particularly enjoy working out or exercising, this is a great way to stay active on days when one doesn’t feel like doing anything too strenuous.

Experiment with food, and make a new meal

Food can take one on an adventure across many cultures and countries. Why not take the time to experiment and try out new foods? It is a great way to expand your tastes and discover more about various countries and cultures. Cooking can also be quite relaxing, and there is something so wonderful about the anticipation of an amazing meal.

Find a pen-pal and start writing snail mail

One of the great things about modern technology is the ability to keep in practically constant contact with friends and family. However, there is something so special and quaint about receiving a proper letter. The anticipation of getting a personal letter is fun! The feeling that someone put time and energy into handwriting and mailing a letter does a great job at making one feel loved and cared about.

Get out into nature more

Getting out into nature is an amazing way to unwind and destress. It has actually been proven that spending time away from buildings and screens has had an effect on stress levels- in a very positive way! Besides, who doesn’t love amazing views of mountains, or lakes, or trees etc? I believe it is important to make time to take hikes or walks admiring God’s creation.

Volunteer for a cause you believe in

If you are passionate about a certain cause, volunteering is an excellent way to become involved in the cause. If you do not have the time to volunteer, sponsoring certain organizations or even beginning to sponsor a child is a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community and to help others.

Try reading a book or watching a movie of a new genre

I love the classics. That being said, I am trying to read more books outside of what I generally read. Some books have been great, some haven’t. I think it is good to ‘widen one’s horizons’, so to say, and find new things that you might not have known you enjoyed.

Become an ‘expert’ in something that interests you

Take the time to research a topic or field that interests you. Whether it be astronomy, sharks, or even flowers, it is always fun to learn about the things that you love. Becoming an ‘expert’ on the topic can lead to enjoyable conversations filled with new facts and discoveries.

Start a collection

A collection can be anything; from baseball caps to mugs, to even pressed flowers! It is something that once you get started can bring excitement into your life when you see something that would fit in perfectly with your collection.

Start a ‘thankful’ jar or notebook

Start taking the time each day to write down something you are thankful for. I began doing this at the beginning of the year, and have found it incredibly helpful to be reminded of how blessed I am, and how much there is to be thankful for. This is an important reminder, especially on bad days, just to remember that there is always something to be thankful for.

Take a class or course and learn a new skill

“The day we stop learning is the day we die” Why not take up some classes on something you have always wanted to do?

Travel somewhere new

I know many people don’t have the luxury of being able to take long extended trips to exotic destinations, but this one can be easy. Can’t make it out of the country? Travel to a new state or province, or even a city you’ve never visited. Make a weekend out of it, and enjoy the new experiences.

Tell the people you care about how much they mean to you, more often

It’s important people know they are loved and cared about. If you take the time each day to tell others how much they mean to you, this is a great way to show your appreciation and love to others. This can be face-to-face, in little cards, or a variety of other ways.

Try doing some DIY’s

Try your hand at some crafting! It is a fun way to spend a lazy day or weekend. It can also be a way to save some money if you come up with something good!

Meditate on/be in the Word every day

Last, but definitely not least, this is extremely important. I know this is probably not something necessarily ‘new’ to many of you, however, I am trying to consistently be in God’s Word each and every day. I have noticed a huge difference in my mood as well as how I act throughout my day when I have spent time in the Word versus when I haven’t. It is important to spend time every day to refocus on what and Who is truly important. Knowing my hope is found in Christ is something that never fails to bring light into my day.

Well, here are a few of my ideas as to new ways to spend your time. I hope you enjoyed! Let me know if any of these piqued your interest!

What are you trying new in your life?

I apologize for the recent lack of activity on my blog. I was quite tired the past few weeks and couldn’t find the time/energy to post. However, from now on I will try my very best to be consistent!
